Info

In this team project, we analysed & evaluated Professional Issues for a hypothetical IT system: a thumbprint based ID system for schools. We each contributed a Professional Issue (e.g. Legal, Health & Safety) to the report & then presented it. We each also carried out a team role, e.g. team leader.

My Contribution

I chose ‘Other Issues’, which focused on social issues, e.g. getting acceptance from 3 “P”s: pupils, parents & the press. In my role as the Document Coordinator, I collected work from my colleagues & collated it into a single document with a consistent writing style, layout and design.

Motivating the Team

Early in the project, I created an outline of the final report so each individual section could be put into place as it was completed. The team was feeling demotivated towards the end of the project as the deadline was approaching. I motivated our team towards completing the report on time by regularly emailing them an updated report, which gave everyone a sense of accomplishment as the empty sections were being filled in.

Resolving Disagreements

A disagreement arose over the colours being used while preparing presentation slides. Three male members of the team wanted dark colours (e.g. dark blues and greens), while the remaining female colleague wanted bright colours (e.g. bright pinks and purples). After trying several different colours, I suggested to the team that we adopt gender neutral colours, such as black, white, gold or silver. The team accepted this; however the female colleague insisted we use a colour of her choice for the text, which the others did not agree with. I suggested a purple that wasn’t bright for the headings and a navy blue for the rest of the text, which finally ended the disagreement. We were able to move on to finalising our slides and start practising our presentation.
